About

After graduating in painting from Norwich University of the Arts (1993), my artistic career began in Cork, Ireland, working at Crawford Art Gallery and as a sign painter. Returning to the UK in 1999, I retrained as a secondary art teacher, then delivered the PGCE art and design programme at Oxford Brookes University (2004-2012).

Since 2006, I have run the MA Education: Artist Teacher Practice at Oxford Brookes University. This course is designed for those who work in art and education, and are interested in the fluid spaces between their artist and teacher identities. This rich community of artist teachers spans the UK and beyond, facilitating exciting approaches to making and teaching.

I’m interested in how humans learn through and with art, craft and design and am a passionate advocate for equal access to arts education. I am a Past President and Fellow of National Society for Education in Art and Design (NSEAD), a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Art, Craft and Design Education, and a Fellow The RSA.

Artworks

There are two main strands to my practice. The first returns to my love of landscapes that originates from growing up in Lincolnshire surrounded by dramatic skies. My husband and I enjoy hiking, and living in Oxfordshire spend much of our weekends walking in the Cotswolds. I use photographs of the landscape as source material, although my relationship with marks, colours, media and form subsequently inform how the artworks materialise.

Through the second strand, I use visual practices (drawing, installation, textiles, photography, film) to research my and others’ lived experiences. These practices tend to be ethnographic or autoethnographic, involving the heuristic process of making, then reflecting on making, then making again. This cyclic approach reveals hidden meanings and understandings.
